Where it came from
The Imaginary Friends card originated as a 'playtest' card featured in the 2021 Mystery Booster set, a unique product from Wizards of the Coast designed to celebrate Magic: The Gathering’s history through unconventional mechanics. These cards were distributed within retail packs, featuring a distinctive, stripped-back visual style reminiscent of internal development prototypes. They were intentionally designed to look unfinished, using placeholder art and simple text to highlight experimental gameplay concepts that did not fit into standard competitive sets.
The design of the Mystery Booster playtest series aimed to evoke the feeling of 'R&D' brainstorming sessions, prioritizing quirkiness and meta-commentary over polished aesthetics. Imaginary Friends, specifically, leans into the playful, self-referential humor common in these experimental releases. While not legal for sanctioned tournament play, the card was well-received by the player base as a whimsical collectible that offers a rare glimpse into the creative process and the lighter, more exploratory side of the game’s design philosophy.
