Provenance

Where it came from

Green Ward was released as part of the International Collectors' Edition (ICE) in 1993, a non-tournament-legal version of early Magic: The Gathering sets designed for international markets. This version features the signature gold-bordered back, which distinguishes it from the black-bordered cards of the Alpha and Beta sets, effectively serving as an early effort to provide collectors with a more accessible way to own iconic card designs.

The card artwork was illustrated by Dameon Willich, who contributed numerous pieces to the game's earliest sets. His style for the Ward cycle leaned into the high-fantasy aesthetic of the early 1990s, focusing on thematic representation of protective magic. Upon its release, the ICE set was primarily viewed as a niche product for collectors, though it has since gained recognition for its role in preserving the history and visual language of the game's formative years.
