Where it came from
Griffin Dreamfinder was released in 2014 as part of the Born of the Gods expansion, the second set in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's enchantment-themed mechanics, reflecting the block's mythological Greek inspiration where mortal belief could manifest as tangible reality. Its inclusion in the white color identity leans into the archetype of the 'white-weenie' or value-engine creature, allowing players to recover enchantments from the graveyard to the hand.
The artwork was created by illustrator Kev Walker, a long-time contributor to the game known for his distinct, gritty style. Walker depicted the Griffin as a mystical, somewhat ethereal figure, capturing the intersection of divine inspiration and avian grace that defined the Theros setting. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional piece for Limited play and niche Commander decks, appreciated by collectors for its thematic consistency with the set's focus on devotion and divine interaction.
