Where it came from
Grim Haruspex was originally introduced in the 2014 Khans of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed as a rare creature representing the Sultai Brood's practice of augury through the remains of the dead. Its mechanical function reflects the dark, morbid themes of the set, rewarding players with card draw whenever another creature they control dies, which solidified its place as a staple in various black-aligned graveyard and sacrifice-themed strategies.
This specific iteration is part of a Secret Lair drop, a series of curated, limited-release cards that frequently experiment with diverse artistic aesthetics outside the traditional Magic: The Gathering house style. By reimagining established cards through unique thematic or stylistic lenses, these drops serve to celebrate the game's expansive lore while providing collectors with specialized, alternative-art versions of iconic gameplay pieces.
