Where it came from
Grim Hireling was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander. This card serves as an homage to the classic Dungeons & Dragons trope of the mercenary, fitting seamlessly into a set designed to translate tabletop role-playing mechanics into the trading card game format. It was crafted to provide players with a strategic way to ramp mana through combat, specifically rewarding decks that focus on treasure generation.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the hireling with a focus on a utilitarian, rugged aesthetic common to the Forgotten Realms setting. The illustration emphasizes the transactional nature of the character, capturing a moment of readiness that aligns with its card ability to create treasure tokens when creatures deal combat damage to players. Upon release, the card was well-received by the commander community for its efficiency and its ability to act as a versatile engine for decks utilizing black mana.
