Where it came from
Grim Hireling was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a supplemental expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed specifically for the Commander multiplayer format. The set served as a thematic sequel to the 2020 Commander Legends release, drawing heavily on the lore and geography of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting to provide cards optimized for social, political gameplay.
The card was illustrated by artist Dmitry Burmak, who utilized a dramatic, high-contrast aesthetic to capture the gritty nature of a professional assassin within the Baldur's Gate underworld. Mechanically, the card was designed to incentivize aggressive combat interaction by rewarding players with Treasure tokens, a feature that made it a notable inclusion in many mid-range and combat-focused decks upon its debut.
