Where it came from
Grip of Phyresis was originally released in the 2016 Commander product line and subsequently reprinted in the Commander Anthology Volume II set in 2018. The card functions as an uncommon blue instant designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, specifically targeting equipment-heavy strategies by allowing players to steal artifacts and attach them to their own creatures. Its inclusion in the Anthology series served to increase the accessibility of popular utility cards that had become staples in the multiplayer format.
The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. The design focuses on the thematic elements of the Phyrexians, a recurring antagonistic faction in the game's lore known for their focus on biomechanical corruption and the assimilation of organic matter. Reception of the card has historically been favorable among Commander players, as it provides a reactive, flavor-driven solution to high-cost artifacts without requiring a significant mana investment.
