Where it came from
Grip of Phyresis was released in 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion, specifically appearing in the Invent Superiority preconstructed deck. This set was designed to explore four-color legendary creatures for the first time in Magic: The Gathering, offering players complex mechanical synergies centered around artifacts. The card was specifically engineered to interact with the Equipment-heavy strategies prevalent in the Commander format, providing a tactical response to powerful artifacts by turning them into creatures.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, who utilized a vivid and unsettling aesthetic to depict the corruption of Phyrexian oil. Baga focused on the transformation process, emphasizing the cold, mechanical nature of the Phyrexians as they overtake a piece of weaponry. Upon release, the card was recognized by players for its niche utility and thematic flavor, fitting seamlessly into the broader lore of New Phyrexia's relentless expansion across the Multiverse.
