Where it came from
Tezzeret's Gambit was first introduced in the New Phyrexia expansion in 2011, reflecting the set's central theme of Phyrexian corruption and the proliferation mechanic. The card depicts the character Tezzeret the Seeker manipulating his surroundings through an act of sabotage, a narrative moment that ties into the broader struggle between the Phyrexians and the Mirrans. Its inclusion in Commander Anthology Volume II, released in 2018, served as a functional reprint, providing players with a widely accessible version of the card for the popular Commander format.
The illustration by Igor Kieryluk captures the cold, mechanical aesthetic associated with the character. Kieryluk’s design focuses on the interplay of blue mana energy and the jagged, metallic influence of Phyrexian technology, emphasizing Tezzeret's role as a master of artifacts. The card was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community, particularly among players who utilize +1/+1 counters or planeswalker loyalty abilities, due to the card's efficiency in combining card draw with the proliferation of game state counters.
