Where it came from
Grisly Ritual was originally released as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set in 2021, later receiving a special monochromatic treatment for the Innistrad: Double Feature set. The design concept for this specific printing utilizes the unique 'silver screen' aesthetic, which strips the artwork of color to evoke the atmosphere of classic gothic horror films. This stylistic choice was intended to pay homage to the roots of the horror genre, aligning with the dark, thematic narrative of the Innistrad plane.
The card artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, whose work frequently appears in the Magic: The Gathering franchise. In his depiction of the ritual, Baga emphasizes the grim, sacrificial nature of the act, utilizing heavy shadows and dramatic lighting to create a sense of impending dread. Upon its release in Double Feature, the card was received by the community as a striking collector's piece, particularly appreciated by those who value the artistic cohesion of the monochrome frame.
