Where it came from
Grisly Salvage was originally released in the 2012 expansion Return to Ravnica, designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team to support graveyard-centric strategies within the Golgari guild. The card serves as a versatile utility spell, allowing players to look at the top five cards of their library and select a creature or land card to add to their hand, while placing the remainder into the graveyard. Its design philosophy centered on enabling 'dredge' and 'reanimation' archetypes, which were foundational to the set’s mechanical identity.
The Friday Night Magic promotional version, released in 2013, features unique 'FNM' set watermarking and a distinct foil finish that distinguishes it from the standard release. These promotional cards were distributed as rewards to participants at local hobby stores hosting weekly Friday Night Magic tournaments. The artwork, provided by Seb McKinnon, captures the eerie, organic decay aesthetic associated with the Golgari, and the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency in smoothing out deck draws during tournament play.
