Where it came from
Grisly Salvage was originally introduced in the Return to Ravnica set, designed to support the Golgari Swarm’s mechanics of graveyard interaction. The card allows players to dig through their library for a creature or land, placing the remaining cards into their graveyard to fuel further resource recursion. This mechanic became a staple in self-mill archetypes, valued for its efficiency in smoothing out the early-to-mid game.
The Commander 2020 version features the specific collector number 215 and utilizes the original illustration by Seb McKinnon. McKinnon’s design aesthetic for this card leans into the organic, decaying, and surrealist nature of the Golgari guild, employing his signature muted palette and haunting composition. Upon its inclusion in the Commander 2020 supplemental product, it was widely praised for its thematic consistency and continued utility in graveyard-focused deck builds.
