Where it came from
Grisly Salvage was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the sprawling cityscape of Ravnica, the card represents the Golgari Swarm, a guild defined by its mastery over life and death. The card mechanics, which allow a player to search for creatures or lands among the top cards of their library while placing the rest in the graveyard, reflect the Golgari philosophy of recycling decay into new growth.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Matt Stewart. Stewart was tasked with capturing the visceral, industrial, and organic aesthetic of the Golgari. His illustration depicts a scavenger amidst the subterranean rot of the city, perfectly encapsulating the 'grixis-style' utility often favored by players who utilize the graveyard as a resource. Upon release, the card became a staple in competitive formats like Modern and Pioneer for its efficiency in facilitating graveyard-focused strategies.
