Grist, the Hunger Tide // Grist, the Hunger Tide

Grist, the Hunger Tide was originally released as a legendary creature planeswalker in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, designed specifically for the Magic: The Gathering Modern format. The Art Series version, collector number 56, was produced as a high-quality, borderless print intended to highlight the intricate creature design of the character. The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Stefan Kopinski, who chose a visceral, insectoid aesthetic to emphasize the character’s connection to the hive mind and the cycle of decay and rebirth.

The reception of this card was notable due to Grist’s unique mechanical identity as a creature that functions as a planeswalker while in the deck or graveyard. Within the broader Art Series, this print is sought after by collectors for its clear, large-scale presentation of Kopinski’s work, which captures the unsettling, tactile nature of the character better than the smaller, crowded layout of the standard game card. It remains a hallmark of the insect-themed tribal designs introduced during the Modern Horizons 2 release.
