Where it came from
The Mental Journey Art Series card was released as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021. These collectible cards were designed to showcase the intricate, high-fantasy illustrations used for the main set, often featuring full-bleed artwork without the standard card frame or text boxes that define typical Magic: The Gathering gameplay pieces.
The illustration for Mental Journey was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work is characterized by dramatic lighting and ethereal, fluid compositions. In this piece, Kieryluk aimed to evoke a sense of psychic exploration and deep intellectual pursuit, a visual theme consistent with the blue-aligned spells common in the Modern Horizons series. The card was well-received by fans of the game for its ability to highlight the artistic talent involved in the set's production, providing a gallery-style presentation of the game's broader aesthetic identity.
