Where it came from
Ground Assault was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising Commander set, a collection of supplemental decks designed to accompany the core Magic: The Gathering Zendikar Rising expansion. This sorcery card draws upon the thematic landscape of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile environment and recurring themes of land-based mechanics, which were central to the set's gameplay identity.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who contributed to the set's aesthetic by capturing the raw, elemental power of the world's terrain. In the context of Commander gameplay, the design focuses on land-centric utility, reflecting the strategic emphasis on ramping and resource management that defined the Zendikar Rising era of Magic: The Gathering.
