Where it came from
Grove of the Dreampods was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase 2012 set, an expansion designed to introduce a multiplayer variant of Magic: The Gathering. As a 'Plane' card, it represents a specific location within the game's multiverse, designed to shift the rules of play and influence the strategic environment for all participants. The card captures the surreal, shifting nature of the plane of Lorwyn, a setting defined by its deep, folkloric roots and ethereal beauty.
The artwork for this plane was illustrated by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the game known for his painterly, atmospheric style. Hamm’s design choice focused on the luminescent and dreamlike flora of the Dreampods, aiming to evoke a sense of quiet wonder that contrasts with the intense conflict typical of the game. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the Planechase format for its ability to generate significant board presence, solidifying its reputation as a memorable piece of Magic's environmental storytelling.
