Where it came from
The Island card from the Mirrodin Besieged set, released in 2011, serves as a thematic component of the Magic: The Gathering block revisiting the metal-drenched plane of Mirrodin. As the second expansion in the Scars of Mirrodin block, the set depicts the inevitable infection of the artificial world by the Phyrexians. The card reflects the corruption of the environment, moving away from the pristine, clockwork aesthetic of original Mirrodin toward a more invasive, organic, and oily technological landscape.
The artwork for this specific Island was created by Jung Park. Park’s design approach for the Mirrodin Besieged basic lands sought to convey the scale of the world’s transformation, utilizing the high-contrast lighting and sweeping, industrial vistas that defined the set’s visual identity. Upon release, these landscapes were noted for their ability to synthesize the game's classic elemental color identity with the specific, grim narrative arc of the Phyrexian invasion, successfully bridging mechanical lore with traditional fantasy environment design.
