Where it came from
Siege of Towers was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion, the second set in the Ravnica block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set focused on the guild dynamics of the plane of Ravnica, specifically featuring the Gruul Clans, Orzhov Syndicate, and Izzet League. The card reflects the aggressive, destructive nature of the Gruul guild, designed to mechanically represent their propensity for tearing down fortifications and overwhelming opponents through sheer force.
The artwork for Siege of Towers was commissioned from artist Greg Staples. Staples, known for his atmospheric and gritty fantasy illustrations, aimed to capture the visceral chaos of the Gruul faction in battle. The piece depicts the frantic energy of an assault on a cityscape, aligning with the block's urban-fantasy aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was received as a situational niche card, praised for its thematic flavor but often noted for its high mana cost relative to its specific utility in competitive play.
