Where it came from
Harbin, Vanguard Aviator was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. The card depicts a key figure from the lore of the conflict between Urza and Mishra, representing the historical expansion of the Brothers' War narrative. It serves as a mechanical support for the artifact-heavy theme that defines the set, reflecting the technological obsession central to the storyline.
The art was illustrated by Dmitry Burmak, who focused on capturing the character's role as a leader of the aerial forces during the war. The design leans into the thematic aesthetic of the set, emphasizing mechanical components and a high-fantasy military tone. Upon release, it was well-received by players focusing on white-blue draft archetypes and casual commander builds that utilize Thopters and artifact synergies.
