Duress was originally introduced in the 1998 Urza's Saga set, designed to provide black-aligned players with an efficient tool for hand disruption. By the release of Magic 2010 in 2009, the card had already established itself as a staple of competitive play, leading Wizards of the Coast to include it in the core set to maintain a consistent power level for standard formats.
