Where it came from
Harper Recruiter was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a supplemental expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format. The set served as a thematic sequel to the 2020 Commander Legends set, focusing on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons setting of Baldur's Gate. As a white-aligned creature card, the Recruiter fits into the set's mechanical emphasis on the 'Choose a Background' drafting mechanic, which allows players to personalize their legendary creatures.
The illustration for Harper Recruiter was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed artwork to numerous Magic: The Gathering sets. Prima's design captures the essence of the Harpers, an elite, semi-secret organization in the Forgotten Realms lore dedicated to preserving balance and opposing tyranny. The card's gameplay design focuses on the 'initiative' mechanic introduced in this set, reflecting the character's role in scouting and bolstering party members within the complex, tactical dungeon-delving environment of the expansion.
