Where it came from
The Harper Recruiter was released as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set in 2022. This expansion was designed to bring the atmosphere and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting into the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, focusing on the iconic city of Baldur's Gate.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Livia Prima, who utilized a bold, illustrative style characteristic of modern fantasy gaming art. The card was designed to highlight the flavor of the Harper organization—an underground group of spies and protectors in the Dungeons & Dragons lore—by mechanically emphasizing the recruitment and gathering of allies to bolster the player's board presence.
