Where it came from
Released in October 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering, Hat Trick represents the set's thematic commitment to science-fiction carnival motifs. Designed as a silver-bordered-style card within a black-bordered set, it utilizes the 'sticker' mechanic introduced in this collection to mechanically represent the card's namesake trick, allowing players to manipulate game state through playful, physical interactions with card components.
The card was illustrated by artist Billy Christian, who leaned into a vibrant, whimsical aesthetic consistent with the circus-themed environment of the set. While cards from Un-sets are traditionally relegated to casual play due to their unconventional mechanics, Hat Trick was noted by the community for its creative integration of the set's unique adhesive-based rules, serving as a distinct example of the experimental design philosophy Wizards of the Coast pursues in their parody-adjacent product lines.
