Where it came from
Clowning Around was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast's 'Un-set' series. These sets are designed to explore the humorous and experimental side of Magic: The Gathering, operating outside of the standard tournament legal environment. This specific card introduces a 'Clown' creature token, leaning into the set’s carnival and space-circus aesthetic while showcasing the whimsical art direction that characterizes the Un-series.
The illustration was crafted by artist Caroline Gariba, who employed a vibrant, playful style to match the chaotic theme of the card. The design intent was to capture a sense of lighthearted absurdity, functioning as a top-down design where the mechanics of the card mirror the slapstick nature of its namesake. Upon its release, it was received as a charming addition to the set, appreciated by players who enjoy the unique, unconventional design space that only the Un-sets typically inhabit.
