Provenance

Where it came from

Heart Wolf was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, a gothic, horror-inflected setting intended to provide a self-contained narrative experience. The set is notable for its thematic focus on legendary figures and creatures struggling within the dark constraints of their home world.

The card was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent artist during the game's early years. Benson's work on Heart Wolf emphasizes the eerie, rustic aesthetic common to the Homelands set, utilizing a stylistic approach that captures the creature's folklore-inspired design. While the card is often cited by players for its niche utility and the set's overall lower power level compared to preceding expansions, it remains a recognized piece of the game's early illustrative history.
