Where it came from
The Heartwood Shard was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a significant departure for the game, as it introduced an artificial, metal-infused plane where almost every card utilized the artifact mechanic. The Shard itself reflects the tension between the organic woods of the plane and the encroaching metallic corruption that defined the Mirrodin setting's lore.
The card was illustrated by Darrell Riche, a veteran artist for Wizards of the Coast who frequently contributed to the fantasy aesthetic of the era. Riche’s design emphasizes the shard’s jagged, crystalline nature, aiming to convey the item's role as a source of power within the game's artifact-heavy mechanics. Upon release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, valued primarily by players looking to recur artifacts in limited or casual play environments.
