Released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, this land card represents the first time Magic: The Gathering players returned to a theme centered entirely around artifacts. Designed by the development team to showcase a plane crafted from metal, the aesthetic shift moved away from traditional fantasy landscapes toward a cold, biomechanical environment. This specific card represents the Mountain, providing the necessary mana for fire-based spells within a world that functioned like a massive, clockwork machine.

The artwork was commissioned from longtime Magic contributor Mark Tedin, who was tasked with reimagining the classic Mountain basic land to fit the metallic, industrial theme of the set. Tedin utilized his signature style to depict the jagged, crystalline rock formations of Mirrodin, emphasizing sharp edges and an otherworldly atmosphere that diverged from the organic woods or stone typical of earlier sets. The card was widely received as a definitive visual anchor for the Mirrodin block, remaining a staple among players building decks within that particular plane's mechanical ecosystem.
