Where it came from
Hero of Goma Fada was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This specific card was distributed as a promotional foil version, often provided to players through tournament participation or store events. The card reflects the set's central theme, which focuses on the Zendikar plane's struggle against the Eldrazi, eldritch entities threatening to consume the world's mana and life force.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the franchise who is recognized for his evocative, high-fantasy style. Voss designed the character to embody the resilient spirit of the Kor people, using lighting and composition to emphasize the hero's rally-focused ability. Within the game, the card is classified as a rare creature that leverages the 'rally' mechanic, which rewards players for playing multiple allies in sequence. It was generally received by the community as a solid, strategic card for limited-format play, valued for its ability to grant temporary invulnerability to a player's army.
