Where it came from
Heroes' Bane was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx set, the final expansion in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. Inspired by the legends and aesthetic of Greco-Roman mythology, the set focused on the enchantments and deities of the plane of Nyx. The card depicts a hydra creature, a classic mythological monster, embodying the set's themes of growth and monstrous power.
The artwork for Heroes' Bane was created by artist Tyler Jacobson. His approach leaned into the dramatic, high-fantasy style synonymous with modern Magic cards, emphasizing the creature's massive scale and the menacing nature of the hydra in a wild, ethereal landscape. It was received by players as a signature limited-format powerhouse due to its ability to grow rapidly, making it a memorable inclusion for those drafting the set during its release.
