Where it came from
Setessan Tactics was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion, the final set in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing thematic inspiration from Greek mythology, the set focused on the interaction between mortals and the gods of the plane of Nyx. This particular card represents the martial culture of Setessa, a city-state modeled after Spartan society, emphasizing communal strength and the strategic use of combat to overcome superior foes.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who chose to capture the intensity of a group of warriors engaged in coordinated combat. By utilizing the 'strive' mechanic, the design allows players to pay extra mana to target multiple creatures, mechanically reinforcing the card's narrative of organized, tactical warfare. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, where it provided a versatile way to manipulate combat outcomes in green-aligned decks.
