Where it came from
Hibernation was originally introduced in the Weatherlight expansion in 1997, featuring art by Brian Snodgrass that depicted a creature withdrawing into a protective, crystalline shell. As a blue sorcery, the card reflects the color's thematic reliance on manipulation and stalling tactics, specifically designed to punish green-aligned decks that rely heavily on creature board presence.
When it was reprinted in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001, the card received updated art by Donato Giancola. Giancola’s interpretation shifted the visual focus toward a more ethereal, magical stasis, aligning with the clean, modernized aesthetic established for the Seventh Edition base set. It remains a classic example of a niche sideboard card that serves as a mechanical countermeasure within the strategic landscape of the game.
