Highway Robber

Highway Robber was first released in the 1999 Urza's Destiny set before being reprinted in Ninth Edition in 2005. It was created as a black-aligned creature designed to provide utility in the limited play environment, specifically by forcing an opponent to discard a card upon entering the battlefield. This mechanic, known as 'enters the battlefield' or 'ETB' effect, was a hallmark of black creature design during that era, intended to offer players both a physical presence on the board and a tactical disruption of the opponent's hand.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by Kev Walker, a prominent fantasy artist who has contributed hundreds of cards to the game. Walker’s depiction captures the gritty, menacing aesthetic characteristic of black-aligned cards in the mid-2000s, focusing on the character's predatory nature. Ninth Edition served as a core set intended to provide a stable foundation for the game's competitive environment, and this card was widely circulated among players due to its common rarity, becoming a staple of kitchen-table play during its tenure in the active card pool.
