Soul Feast

Soul Feast was originally released as a black sorcery in the 2005 Ninth Edition core set of Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant milestone for Wizards of the Coast, as it was the first core set to feature a modern card frame design, intended to unify the aesthetic of the game across both core and expansion releases. The card serves as a mechanical callback to earlier eras of the game, embodying the classic black-aligned strategy of life drain where a player simultaneously weakens an opponent and bolsters their own health pool.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Adam Rex, who was a prolific contributor to the game during this period. His design for Soul Feast captures a surreal, macabre atmosphere that aligns with the color identity of black mana. By using high-contrast lighting and unsettling imagery, Rex intended to emphasize the predatory nature of the spell.
