Where it came from
High Troller was released as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster set, a unique product created by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering. These cards, often referred to as 'Playtest Cards,' were designed to mimic the aesthetic of internal R&D prototypes, featuring distinct charcoal-colored borders and a hand-drawn visual style that emphasized functional experimentation over polished final production art.
The card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to explore 'silver-bordered' design space within a formal game environment. It plays on the concept of luck and dice-rolling mechanics, serving as a humorous nod to high-variance gameplay. Upon its release, it was received as a cult favorite among players who appreciate the unconventional, behind-the-scenes look at how Magic cards are conceptualized before reaching their final, balanced form.
