Where it came from
Hinder was released as a promotional card through the Magic Player Rewards program in 2006, serving as a participation incentive for active tournament players. Originally printed in the Champions of Kamigawa set, this specific version features unique alternate artwork by artist Matt Cavotta. The program was designed by Wizards of the Coast to encourage consistent engagement with local game stores by rewarding players with exclusive foil versions of cards that saw frequent competitive play.
The card’s design centers on a fundamental mechanic of blue control decks: countering spells and manipulating the opponent's library. Matt Cavotta’s illustration captures this essence through a visual representation of defensive magic, moving away from the more traditional imagery of the original card to offer a distinct aesthetic intended for dedicated collectors. Upon its release, it was well-received by the player base for its blend of practical utility in formats like Commander and its updated, stylized presentation.
