Giant Growth

Giant Growth was originally printed in Alpha, the inaugural set of Magic: The Gathering released in 1993, serving as a foundational combat trick that defined the green color identity. The 2006 Magic Player Rewards version was issued as a promotional card for active tournament players, rewarding them for their participation in sanctioned events throughout that year. These promotional cards were distributed via mailings to members of the DCI, the game's former organized play governing body, to incentivize consistent engagement with local gaming stores.

The 2006 promotional iteration features updated artwork by artist Christopher Rush, who was a central figure in the game's early visual aesthetic. Rush opted for a dynamic, visceral depiction of the spell’s effect, emphasizing the sudden, transformative power inherent in the card's mechanic. While the card's function remained identical to its original version, the unique frame and distinct illustration served as a collectible status symbol for players, reflecting the game's transition into a more sophisticated secondary market and organized play ecosystem during the mid-2000s.
