Hindering Touch

Hindering Touch was released in 2003 as part of the Scourge set, the final expansion of the Onslaught block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card reflects the set's mechanical focus on storm—a keyword ability that copies a spell for each spell played before it in a turn—as well as the high-mana-cost utility cards that defined that era of play. It was created to provide blue mages with a reactive tool to disrupt opponents who were attempting to chain multiple spells together in a single flurry.

The card features artwork by veteran illustrator Matt Cavotta, whose work contributed significantly to the visual identity of the game during the early 2000s. Cavotta employed his signature expressive style to depict the tactile, arcane nature of countering a spell, grounding the abstract concept of a counterspell in a moment of physical interruption. While the card is often cited by players for its niche utility and the specific tactical limitations of its trigger requirements, it remains a recognized example of the set’s exploration into complex, turn-state-dependent mechanics.
