Where it came from
Hindervines was released in 2013 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Gatecrash. The card was designed as a green instant within the set's mechanical framework, which focused heavily on the conflict between the five guilds represented on the plane of Ravnica. This particular card was intended to support the Selesnya Conclave’s playstyle, utilizing the 'populate' mechanic to reward players for reinforcing their board presence during combat.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often defines the atmospheric aesthetic of the Ravnica plane. Kieryluk was tasked with depicting the magical, defensive nature of Selesnya’s naturalistic defenses. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for limited formats, valued for its ability to mitigate damage while simultaneously providing a tactical advantage through token generation.
