Where it came from
Hindervines was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set, a supplemental product designed to expand on the narrative of the broader Magic: The Gathering expansion. Mechanically, the card reflects the set's focus on high-impact, multiplayer-oriented spells, providing players with a defensive tool that scales in effectiveness based on the size of the attacking force. It fits within the Green color identity, emphasizing the themes of nature's resilience and reactionary growth that are central to the game's long-standing mechanical philosophy.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Svetlin Velinov, a veteran contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Tasked with illustrating the concept of ensnaring, rapidly growing vines, Velinov opted for a dynamic composition that emphasizes the organic, entangling nature of the magic. The art was well-received by the player base for its clarity and thematic alignment with the card’s ability to neutralize combat damage, serving as a functional and aesthetic addition to green decks in the Commander format.
