Where it came from
The Homarid Explorer was released in the 2018 set Dominaria, a nostalgic return to the plane where the game of Magic: The Gathering first began. As part of a design initiative to revisit iconic creature types from the game's early history, the card depicts the Homarids, a race of crustacean-like humanoids that first appeared in the 1994 expansion Fallen Empires. The inclusion of this creature served to bridge the gap between long-time veterans familiar with the oceanic conflicts of the original set and newer players experiencing the history of the game for the first time.
The illustration was crafted by artist Josan Gonzalez, who brought a vibrant, science-fiction sensibility to the card's aesthetic. Gonzalez focused on the rugged, tactical appearance of the Homarid, emphasizing its role as a scout in the murky waters of Dominaria. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, balanced addition to the Limited format, praised by players for its flavor-rich design that successfully updated a classic creature type without losing the charm of its 1990s origins.
