Homarid Warrior

Homarid Warrior was released in the 1994 Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was conceived as a darker, thematic exploration of a crumbling subterranean empire, departing from the high-fantasy tropes of previous releases. The card depicts a crustacean-like creature reflecting the set's focus on the deep-sea Homarid race, a faction introduced during this era to broaden the game's biological diversity.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists involved in the game’s inception. Maddocks utilized a distinct, somewhat visceral style that was characteristic of early Magic card art, intended to evoke a sense of alien menace. While the card is often remembered by players for its complex 'spore counter' mechanics, its design remains a signature example of the experimental period that defined the mid-nineties expansion era.
