"The ground grew swampy; hooves and claws sank into the marshy earth. Snarls of rage and bleats of despair echoed through the trees as the waters grew higher and higher."— Kyliki of Havenwood, "Havenwood Remembered"

Where it came from
The Homarid Shaman was released as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1994. The set was designed to explore the sociopolitical collapse of the fictional continent of Sarpadia, focusing on tribal conflicts between various species, including the crustacean-like Homarids. As a mechanic, the Homarids were defined by their reliance on tide counters, reflecting the ebb and flow of the ocean and the creature's vulnerability when the tide receded.
The illustration for this card was created by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. His work on this piece captures the strange, alien anatomy of the Homarid, utilizing a somber color palette that fits the set's grim environmental storytelling. At the time of its release, the card received limited play in competitive circles due to its narrow situational utility, but it remains a notable example of the unique creature design aesthetic prevalent during the game's formative years.
