Provenance

Where it came from

The Hornet Cannon was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold focused on the dark, oppressive environment of the plane of Rath and introduced mechanics centered around creature combat and resource management. The card was designed to represent the aggressive, industrial aesthetic of the Phyrexian-aligned forces that controlled the plane, fitting into the artifact-heavy themes of the era.

The card’s illustration was created by Ron Spencer, a prominent artist known for his gritty and visceral style during the late 1990s. Spencer utilized bold, dark lines and a sharp, metallic color palette to convey the weapon's destructive purpose. The design was received as a functional, if niche, piece of utility for artifact decks of the time, appreciated by players for its thematic consistency within the Rath storyline rather than its competitive dominance.
