Where it came from
Megrim was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold set, the second expansion in the Rath Cycle of Magic: The Gathering. Designed to mechanically represent the psychological toll of discarding cards, the enchantment punishes opponents by dealing damage whenever they are forced to discard from their hand. It quickly became a staple of 'discard' archetypes, fitting into a tactical environment where resources were heavily taxed through spells like Mind Rot.
