Horror

The Horror token, numbered 23 in the Commander 2019 token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in August 2019 to support the mechanics introduced in the preconstructed decks of that year. These tokens are designed to provide physical representation for creature types summoned by various spells and abilities within the set, specifically those generated by cards such as Chainer, Nightmare Adept, which frequently creates Nightmare Horror tokens. The token serves a functional role in gameplay, ensuring board states remain clear and legible during matches of the Magic: The Gathering Commander format.

The artwork for this token aligns with the atmospheric, macabre aesthetic characteristic of the Magic: The Gathering horror-themed expansions. The design prioritizes a visual language of dread and instability, consistent with the set's overall focus on graveyard recursion and creature manipulation. As a utilitarian component of the Commander 2019 release, it was not individually illustrated by a specific credited artist in the same manner as primary set cards, but rather produced as part of the cohesive visual identity established by the company's art department to maintain consistency across the deck's ancillary materials.
