Where it came from
Huatli, Radiant Champion was released in the 2018 expansion Rivals of Ixalan as a Mythic Rare planeswalker card. The card depicts Huatli, a warrior-poet from the Sun Empire who gains the ability to planeswalk after discovering her latent magical potential amidst the hunt for the Immortal Sun. The set was designed to emphasize the exploration and faction-based conflict of the Ixalan plane, blending Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics with high-fantasy tropes.
The card illustration was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, who sought to capture Huatli’s dual nature as a fierce defender and a lyrical chronicler. By focusing on her radiant light-based magic, the artwork aims to represent her growth from a local champion into a cosmic traveler. Within the competitive Magic: The Gathering community, the card is recognized for its unique ability to scale based on the number of creatures on the battlefield, reflecting her thematic role as a leader of the Sun Empire.
