Where it came from
Huatli, Radiant Champion was introduced in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering expansion Rivals of Ixalan. The character of Huatli, a warrior-poet from the Sun Empire, was designed to represent the Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic of the Ixalan plane. This specific version, numbered 159s, is a promotional variant featuring alternate art that highlights the character's connection to the dinosaurs she commands, intended to serve as a reward for participants in game store release events.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character work. Her design for this promo focuses on the symbiotic relationship between Huatli and her mounts, utilizing a vibrant color palette to evoke the tropical, high-stakes environment of the set. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors and players alike, praised for the dynamism of the illustration and its role in expanding the lore surrounding the Sun Empire's culture.
