The Human Soldier token was released in 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created to represent creatures summoned by specific spells and abilities during gameplay, these tokens are functional accompaniments rather than collectible cards in their own right. This specific token was designed to capture the aesthetic of the Theros plane, a setting heavily inspired by Greek mythology, which emphasizes heroic archetypes and the divine influence of pantheistic gods.

The artwork was commissioned from Kimonas Theodossiou, a regular contributor to the franchise. Theodossiou focused on the stoic, battle-hardened appearance typical of a soldier within the Theros setting, utilizing the artist's signature style to blend classical motifs with the high-fantasy visual language of the game. Like many tokens from the modern era of the game, it was designed to be clear and readable during intense matches, ensuring players could distinguish their summoned units from their primary deck cards.
