Where it came from
The Human Soldier token, released in the Streets of New Capenna Commander set in 2022, was designed to support the specific mechanics introduced in the expansion. New Capenna featured a distinct art deco and noir-inspired aesthetic, drawing heavily from 1920s architecture and mob culture. This token was created to represent the rank-and-file reinforcements generated by various cards within the set, ensuring that players had a consistent physical marker for their board state during matches of the Commander format.
The artwork for this token aligns with the set's signature aesthetic, focusing on the gritty, urban atmosphere of the titular city. Illustrators for the New Capenna token cycle were tasked with depicting the diverse factions and inhabitants of the plane, often utilizing sharp lines and opulent details to reflect the era's design language. The card was well received by the community for providing a functional, thematic accompaniment to the set's token-generating cards, maintaining the high visual standards expected of modern Magic: The Gathering supplementary products.
